With the mind open, learning never ends
When do the adventures and lessons of the Mindful Dog Owner end? They don’t.
For the Mindful Dog Owner, learning is the same as breathing. As long as there is a pulse in her veins, there are opportunities for new experiences, new strategies. She cultivates the child’s mind, the “beginner’s mind,” with each step along the path.
Zen Buddhist teacher Taisen Deshimaru said, “Keep your hands open, and all the sands of the desert can pass through them. Close them, and all you can feel is a bit of grit.” Like an open hand that touches grains of sand but does not grasp them, a mind that is open absorbs the fullness of life…The Mindful Dog Owner drinks in the liquid of life, each moment of each day, in harmony with her four-legged companion, celebrating the mushin wisdom of “I don’t know.” The soulful look of love in her dog’s eyes is her greatest reward. It makes the Mindful Dog Owner’s journey one whose joys cannot be measured.
