When people allow a dog to take control in the household, they abdicate their role as the pack leader. They may find that the dog becomes “pushy” or “bossy,” demands a specific sleeping area, becomes overly protective, especially of food, demands attention, or ignores the owner completely.
Here are some steps that the owner can take to reclaim the lead position:
- Always go through doorways first
- Assign the resting/sleeping areas for all “pack members”
- Never offer food for free (a “no free lunch” policy)
- On walks, set the direction and pace
These actions will help to demonstrate who is “the boss.” Then it is up to the owner to consistently reinforce his or her role as the leader.
