Capture a behavior

A technique called capturing is an effective, easy way to teach your dog a new behavior. Pick something that your dog does automatically, with no prompting, such as lying down–then wait and watch. The instant that he lies down, mark the action by saying “Good!” (or clicking, if you use a clicker) and reward him. Keep this up and slowly add a cue: just as he lies down, say “Down.” After a while, your dog will understand that “down” means “lie down, get a reward.”
